*AISC Quality Certification sets a standard for the steel industry.  Companies that are AISC certified have been through a rigorous initial evaluation, and are subject to yearly reviews.  AISC's independent auditing company confirms that companies have the personnel, knowledge, organization, equipment, experience, capability, procedures, and commitment to produce the required quality of work for a given category, whether they are a fabricating plant, erector or metal building company.

The program confirms that an individual company has the capability of performing the desired level of work. The program does not look at specific projects; rather, the highly detailed checklist focuses on general management, engineering and drafting, procurement, operations and quality control. Auditors spot check records, interview workers and observe work and conditions in facilities to evaluate shops against quality criteria.

Conventional Steel Building Structures

Includes small public service and institutional buildings (schools, etc.), shopping centers, light manufacturing plants, miscellaneous and ornamental iron work, warehouses, low-rise beam/column/light truss structures. Criteria for this category include a review of the organization, procedures and resources in the company’s office and worksites.

Complex Steel Building Structures

Includes large public service and institutional buildings, heavy manufacturing plants, powerhouses, metal producing/rolling buildings, crane girders, bunkers and bins, stadia, auditoriums, high-rise buildings, petro/chemical processing. Companies certified for Complex Steel Buildings are also automatically certified for Conventional Steel Building Structures. This category requires a level of organization and ability to handle the planning associated with large projects consisting of multiple erection sequences and fabrication practices used in large or heavy assemblies.

Simple Steel Bridges

Includes highway sign structures, parts for bridges (such as cross frames), unspliced rolled beam bridges. Companies in this category demonstrate a level of competence and familiarity with commonly accepted fabrication practices in furnishing bridges including familiarity with AWS D1.5.*
